The hair implant is a surgical method for alopecia treatment being considered the most common cosmetic procedure in the male.The transplant of hairy skin is carried out from areas unaffected by hair loss. The best candidates for this kind of intervention are the young males of about 30 years, healthy, motivated and with thick and good quality hair in the donor area (unaffected by hair loss).

Alopecia can have different causes:

  • Hormonal (androgen hair loss), when the hair follicles are inhibited by the androgen hormones;
  • Post-traumatic;
  • After burns;
  • After the excision of some tumors of the scalp skin.

There are three major procedures through which hair is transplanted in hair loss areas:

  • Grafts of hairy skin;
  • Flaps from the scalp;
  • Scalp reduction;

In patients under 30 it is possible that the hair loss areas are not stabilized and they should be informed that would need other interventions in the future.

The surgery is carried out in outpatients or in hospitalized patients, being preferred the local anesthesia.
Before surgery, the head of the patient is shaved in the donor area.
The grafts are of 44.5 mm in diameter and are harvested by means of a thin surgical knife, under magnification. The harvest manipulations are very gentle so that the hair follicles are not injured. The number of hairy skin grafts recycled in a session is variable depending on the alopecia dimensions, averaging 50-75.

In the first 4 weeks after surgery there is a false growth of the transplanted hair, followed by its loss.
Two to three months after the surgery the transplanted hair grows permanently, with about 1 cm a month and at least 6 months are required in order to see a significant growth. Post-operative the patient will receive prophylactic antibiotics for a few days and the possible pain sensation is controlled with the suitable medication. The patient should avoid the local traumatisms.

The possible complications are rare:

  • Medicines allergies (at the anesthetic or antibiotic);
  • Graft necrosis as a consequence of local traumatisms with the affliction of the vascularization;
  • Infections.

The hair transplant is the main method for alopecia treatment in the frontal area and it is an easy performable surgery that not supposes major risks for the patient.
